Nokia N8 powering a USB fan , enjoy texting in heat

You can now enjoy texting under the sun :) .. but you will be draining your phone's battery faster :P

Aside from this, I can also charge my bluetooth headset using this phone. What a very neat device.

Its not the technology, its what you do with it.

How about you, what have your tried unique on n8? Share them on the comments below.

Swype is now available for N8

Initially, only C7 is the S^3 device that supports swype application due to some issues of it on N8. Now dailymobile.se posted an updated regarding swype's availability for n8.

Open this link on your n8's web application http://store.ovi.com/content/58438
or just search swype on ovi store

I downloaded it right from the ovi store. After installation you will see "Installation error". Just ignore it. Maybe because swype is not really a standalone application but rather an add in on the virtual keyboard for n8. Don't forget to restart the phone after installation.

My n8's first freeze and how to hard reset it

This day is the first time my phone freezes/hangs and its kinda frustrating because I don't know what to do. Anyway the story is that I'm riding the MRT while playing games and listening to music on my phone. It was a typical day but didn't go as planned. I forgot to hide my bluetooth from all devices. So while I was playing hero of sparta someone tried sending a file via bluetooth then there it goes. I tried cancelling the transfer and then the phone freezes. Can't do nothing about it since i dont know how to turn off the phone. Can't also remove the battery to force the phone to turn off.

I only reset the phone when I came into the office. Able to research on how to hard reset it.

Hold the Power , Volume decrease, Camera shutter and Menu button simultaneously for 5-10 seconds (or until the phone turns off).

N8 and playing large movie files

The phone can't accept files larger than 4gb. It's a file system (FAT32) limitation

I tried copying the movie on a flash disk instead and use USB-ON-THE-GO to play the movies on n8. It doesnt work either. If the file system of the flash disk is FAT32 also, you won't be able to copy files on it that is larger than 4gb. I tested changing the format to NTFS to allow file size larger than 4gb. Was able to successfully transfer the movie file onto the flash disk but if you connect it to N8, N8 will treat the disk as corrupted. I think only FAT32 is supported as of the moment.

I wasn't able to play a movie with file size between 2gb and 4gb. I don't have any available movies that meets the criteria. Most of the movies i have are less than 1.9gb or more than 4gb.

Playing Need for speed shift on HDTV using N8 via HDMI

This is how playing NFS shift on HDTV via N8 on HDMI cable looks like. As you can see, the accelerometer control is pretty responsive. If not only because of the HDMI cable hooked on to the N8, it will be perfect way to play this game at home. Now where can I possibly buy a mobile mini HDMI wireless adapter :P Is there even such device existing on the market?

Pardon for the low quality record. I only used nokia e71 to capture the video.
I'll update this as soon as i get hold of a high quality recorder.

N8's retail price is more expensive than the pre-ordered price

The best thing I did this last quarter of 2010 is when I pre-ordered my nokia n8. Why? Because I confirmed with the Nokia store clerks that the N8's price will increase by P1500.00 - P2000.00 depending on store by the time of release for retail.

Just as I believed, P 23,699.00 is too damn cheap , too good to be true, considering what you can get with the phone, actually its true but only for a day. Aside from the fact that I already saved 1.5k - 2k worth of money, I also got 4 (2 x 2 preorder) free movie tickets and 2 sets of jolly time pop corns (1 x 2 preorders)  and 1 16gb flash drive.

Update: According to a friend who bought his N8 on gateway, the nokia store there told him that the price of the pre-order and retail n8 is just the same.  Now I'm confused.

Nokia box is packaged inside a nokia n8 sling bag

I claimed my N8 yesterday at Nokia Store, Greenbelt 1, Makati. Luckily , there's no line already when I got there (around 2:30pm). The store manager said that there are many people waiting for them to open the store in the morning.

As you can see, the box is very slim in profile (to save mother earth). There's a glossy nokia N8 cover box, and inside is the original nokia n8 matte blue box (which is the box familiar to everyone).

Nokia N8 clone spotted on Philippines, how to know one

I've checked one of the leading site for buying and selling products and services on Philippines (sulit.com.ph) in search of cheaper Nokia N8s compared to the pre-order SRP price of Nokia PH. Unfortunately, I saw N8 clones along the way (pictured above).

Some people have difficulty distinguishing kirf items from authentic items, and many sellers are taking advantage of it, so here is a list of things to remember before buying your N8 or any other Nokia phones.

Nokia N8 is shipping today

photo taken from conversations.nokia.com
So yes, the N8 is officially released to the world. First to receive are those who pre-ordered (which does not include us Filipinos since nokia.com.ph doesn't have any way to accept pre-orders).
The first Nokia N8 devices have left the factories in Finland and China and are now making their way around the world. First recipients will be those who pre-ordered and with the highest ever pre-order for a Nokia device, there will be plenty of happy Nokia N8 users over the coming weeks.
Those who pre-ordered should expect their devices to reach their doorstep starting tomorrow until end of the week.

Just remember that this is a global launch so expect some problem on the way since we are talking about millions of devices here being shipped around the world.

Nokia N8 - powerhouse device , why I chose this from a selection of popular smartphones [updated]

People have been asking me a question why I like Nokia N8 so much. Why would I choose and wait for this device instead of other popular smartphone thats currently in the market. Well, my answer is that N8 is the best..

.. in terms of specifications

(it may not have 1ghz processer) BUT N8 has the fastest GPU for a smartphone. That's why it does not need ghz scale processors cause the GPU takes most of the load already from the CPU.

N8 has the best camera sensor on all smartphones. It's even comparable to some DSLR and best several point and shoot cameras. Here is a link of some pictures taken using n8.

N8 supports dolby digital sorround sound. - Aside from mobile Dolby surround that creates a virtual surround when you are listen to your stereo headphones , and can hook up to your home theater :) in 5.1 surround sound.

Turn your nokia s^3 devices into a mobile TV + your monitor with HDMI as tv as well

Symbian^3 devices will support DVB-H (Digital Video Broadband – Handset) using a type of headset (shown on the left) that plugs into nokia s^3 devices USB slots.

The headset handles call reception and volume in a similar way to other mobile headsets, so you won’t miss calls while you’re watching the game. It also features keys for changing channels and music controls for the player on your handset. There’s an app called Mobile TV available for compatible handsets. It’s either pre-installed on compatible devices or it can be downloaded from the Ovi Store.
With this, Nokia N8 will truly become a multimedia monster. Imagine now that n8 can hook up into your monitors with HDMI and turn them into a TV.

Sorry fellow Filipinos, this will not work for us yet (we don't use DVB-H signals yet) so you need to stick to your china tv phones for a while :P

N8 free at 2.4k per month for 24 months at UK [update]

Nokia n8 is pretty damn cheap on UK.

According to Nokia Direct (official Nokia Retail) the Nokia N8 is available to buy on contract with O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile. The N8 is free on a 24 month contract, at 35GBP per month.
and free HDMI cable too.

35 GBP is equivalent to 2.4k pesos (but if its in euros, it will be equivalent to 1.9k pesos) and usually, high end phone here in PH are only free at plan 2500 or more.

Lucky Britons.

update: GBP is british pounds, I interchange it with euros . Thanks again to pinaylover.
update 2: I'm getting confused caused the quotation says the cost in GBP but the screenshot shows the euro sign. But anyway , euro or GBP it is, its still damn cheap.

Anyway, hopefully this will be the same price by the time it landed here in PH (cross fingers on sept 30).

Nokia on Sept 30 , additional proof

We are now getting stronger on the belief that the n8 will launch by sept 30, 2010  after a certain Tapani Kaskinen  of nokia communcations said the following words.
N8 are expected to sell well, at least initially. It has received advance orders, inter alia, Verkkokauppa.com and Nokia's own online store. Price is defined in both 499 euros.Advance orders begin shipping 30 September, "says Tapani Kaskinen Nokia Communications.
But we can't still say if this is the same as the philippine's release date. Hello, we need a reliable source, someone from nokia philippines! Have mercy on us :P

N8 on philippines by end of september??

We got an interesting lead from Pinaylover about the possible release date of the Nokia N8 on philippines by end of september.

We're both I'm subscribed with the Nokia N8's facebook page but I didn't notice this post. Hopefully this is true as their are lot of filipinos dying to get their hands on this phone. And if ever this is real, this will be the first time that Nokia PH will not be very very late in high end product release.

Thank you very much pinaylover for the tip!

Recent interesting topics about nokia n8 , sadly release date for RP is not one of them

I'm not seeing head turning articles recently about nokia n8 and any updates related to it (where mostly composed of video and image samples) but I was able to came across some interesting topics so I consolidated them on a list:

Unique
Nokia N8 as portable HTPC / Multimedia center - N8 connected to a tv via HMDI coupled with bluetooth keyboard and mouse is the ultimate portable HTPC for everyone. ** Plus the 3.5mm audio jack accepts most multimedia speakers, so we are not limited to our TV's speaker if no HDMI sound system is present.

Games
Angry Birds - a popular and addictive game on iphone/ipod touch ported to n8.

Video Samples
Low light and outdoors

Ovi Maps
Pinch and zoom demoed

Firmware Updates
Near final (release) version final
Swype on N8 - Swype allows a user to enter a word by sliding a finger or stylus from letter to letter, lifting only between words but I don't think it will be helpful for us Filipinos since most of the time we converse through text by tagalog words or shortened  msgs /txt lingo.

No words yet on the exact release date for philippines.
