Sometimes, the things that you'd like to buy can only be found online. And aside from fear of being scammed out of your money, another thing that holds back filipinos to buy online is the convenience of paying. Most of the time, I'm discouraged on buying online due to lack of credit card support from several merchants (because of the cost associated with it) and the hassle of going to banks to pay in cash. Additionally, a large population of Filipinos do not have credit cards. I was able to talked to different kinds of people on different industry and to many, unlike for us I.T. professionals, other people are having a hard time getting approved with credit cards due to strict requirements being imposed by credit card companies.

Approximately 93% of Filipino’s do not have credit cards and need an alternative, cash-based method in order to buy goods and services online - Cashsense

BayanDSL sets broadband bandwidth cap, doesn't affect me that much these days

an announcement from a Forum Helper?

According to Yugatech, from the official forums of bayandsl , a bandwidth cap has been imposed on bayanDSL subscribers (which includes me). I've been seeing several posts already from different blogs about other ISP's issuing bandwidth cap (and I dont even mind) but now, although yugatech mentioned about it not yet being appended on the Acceptable Usage Policy page , I still somehow got alarmed cause I'm not sure if the cap is not sufficient on my internet needs.

So I head on and checked my bandwidth usage for the last months and this is the result:

For Nov 2010 - 10.39 GB
For Dec 2010 - 6.44 GB

On average , I'm only using less than 10% of the alloted bandwidth for me. My internet activities includes
1. Chatting/voice and video chat
2. Youtube streaming
3. Visiting blogs and new sites everyday
5. Playing facebook games
6. Facebook
7. Online gaming
8. Occasional torrent downloading

I'm also sharing my internet with 2 laptops here at home , and 1 laptop from a neighbor. We also have lan party/internet party on few weekends.

If i'm still on the stage on downloading movies (which was few months ago), I think I'll be hogging that 100gb cap in no time, specially with my bittorrent client running 24/7.

Check out your bandwidth usage at www.bayan.com.ph/aup/usage

Skype for S^3 review

Skype is now officially supported for S^3 handset such as Nokia N8, C7, C6-01 and E7, and E5(non S^3).

It includes SILK, our high quality audio codec, which should help make sure your calls are crystal clear, even when you’re on a low-bandwidth connection.
Skype lets you:
make free Skype-to-Skype calls and IM on 3G or WiFi *
- save money on calls and texts to phones abroad
- share pictures, videos and other files from your phone
The update also contains a number of interface improvements, making it easier to add contacts, navigate, add a photo to your profile and set your mood message. Additionally, we’ve updated the interface to better fit larger screens.
It's a good thing that skype has supported s^3 devices now but if you're not limited on contacting your friends using skype only then skype is no better than nimbuzz nor fring.

Why ?
  • No Video Call.
  • No loudspeaker feature.
  • Doesn't work with bluetooth headset if bluetooth connection is not enabled before a skype call is initiated.
I'm pretty sure the said features above will come after an update but the question is when that update is coming?..  So for now, unless i don't have other way of calling a friend via VOIP except skype, I'm sticking to nimbuzz for a while.

To get it, point your mobile browser to www.skype.com/m

Improving N8 battery life - prolong remaining time

Most of us complain about N8's battery life (although its even better than most smartphones today). I have mentioned before that one possibility is because we got used to longer battery life of our previous phones (which could be a non-smartphone/feature-phone or smartphones that are the like of e71 - 1500mah battery with small screen). Anyway without any more discussion, nokia presented several ways on how we can lengthen our n8's battery life - useful when going on trips:

Swype is now available for N8

Initially, only C7 is the S^3 device that supports swype application due to some issues of it on N8. Now dailymobile.se posted an updated regarding swype's availability for n8.

Open this link on your n8's web application http://store.ovi.com/content/58438
or just search swype on ovi store

I downloaded it right from the ovi store. After installation you will see "Installation error". Just ignore it. Maybe because swype is not really a standalone application but rather an add in on the virtual keyboard for n8. Don't forget to restart the phone after installation.

My n8's first freeze and how to hard reset it

This day is the first time my phone freezes/hangs and its kinda frustrating because I don't know what to do. Anyway the story is that I'm riding the MRT while playing games and listening to music on my phone. It was a typical day but didn't go as planned. I forgot to hide my bluetooth from all devices. So while I was playing hero of sparta someone tried sending a file via bluetooth then there it goes. I tried cancelling the transfer and then the phone freezes. Can't do nothing about it since i dont know how to turn off the phone. Can't also remove the battery to force the phone to turn off.

I only reset the phone when I came into the office. Able to research on how to hard reset it.

Hold the Power , Volume decrease, Camera shutter and Menu button simultaneously for 5-10 seconds (or until the phone turns off).

N8 and playing large movie files

The phone can't accept files larger than 4gb. It's a file system (FAT32) limitation

I tried copying the movie on a flash disk instead and use USB-ON-THE-GO to play the movies on n8. It doesnt work either. If the file system of the flash disk is FAT32 also, you won't be able to copy files on it that is larger than 4gb. I tested changing the format to NTFS to allow file size larger than 4gb. Was able to successfully transfer the movie file onto the flash disk but if you connect it to N8, N8 will treat the disk as corrupted. I think only FAT32 is supported as of the moment.

I wasn't able to play a movie with file size between 2gb and 4gb. I don't have any available movies that meets the criteria. Most of the movies i have are less than 1.9gb or more than 4gb.

  • Recent calls tab: see all your received, missed and outgoing calls.

  • 3 options to view the Contact List.
  • Sort contacts by status.
  • My info tab: gives you quick access to your profile, NimbuzzOut credits, accounts,  suggested friends and friend invites.
  • Facebook Connect: removes the 400 contacts limit and connectivity issues.
